Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a new rule coming into effect on September 14, 2019, as part of PSD2 regulation in Europe, will require changes to how your European customers authenticate online payments. Card payments will require a different user experience, namely 3D Secure, in order to meet SCA requirements. Transactions that don’t follow the new authentication guidelines may be declined by your customers’ banks
3D Secure provides a layer of protection against fraudulent payments that is supported by most card issuers. The upcoming Strong Customer Authentication regulation in Europe requires the use of 3D Secure for card payments. Unlike regular card payments, 3D Secure requires cardholders to complete an additional verification step with the issuer. Typically, this involves showing the customer an authentication page on their bank’s website, where they are prompted to enter a password associated with the card or a verification code sent to their phone. This process is familiar to customers through the card networks’ brand names, such as Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check.
What do the new rules for SCA and 3D Secure mean for me and my Wodify account?
1. If you are an athlete:
You may have received an email notification from Wodify about authenticating your payment method.
If you are currently a member of a gym that uses Wodify, the SCA in Europe requires that you authorize your payment method when making a retail, drop-in or membership purchase at your gym.
Here's how you can authenticate your payment method through your app:
Note: Every authorization required will vary based on your bank
2. If you are a gym owner:
Anytime you are manually entering someone else's credit card information in Wodify, you will be prompted with additional SCA instructions.
When adding a payment method on behalf of a member, you may be asked to complete additional steps in order to proceed in charging this athlete. Here are the places in Wodify that will prompt Strong Customer Authentication:
- Point of Sale
- +New Payment Method from an athlete's profile
- Drop-in Payments on the Coachboard
- Manually paying an invoice
By selecting the recommended option 'On their device,' your athlete will be sent an email in order to authorize their payments. Please refer to the above instructions titled "1. If you are an athlete" if your member has questions about this authorization process.
Note: The athlete will need to be present if you select to authenticate 'On this Device', as this option may require bank logins or other additional personal information.
