Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), a new rule coming into effect on September 14, 2019, as part of PSD2 regulation in Europe, will require changes to how your European customers authenticate online payments. Card payments will require a different user experience, namely 3D Secure, in order to meet SCA requirements. Transactions that don’t follow the new authentication guidelines may be declined by your customers’ banks
3D Secure provides a layer of protection against fraudulent payments that is supported by most card issuers. The upcoming Strong Customer Authentication regulation in Europe requires the use of 3D Secure for card payments. Unlike regular card payments, 3D Secure requires cardholders to complete an additional verification step with the issuer. Typically, this involves showing the customer an authentication page on their bank’s website, where they are prompted to enter a password associated with the card or a verification code sent to their phone. This process is familiar to customers through the card networks’ brand names, such as Visa Secure and Mastercard Identity Check.
What do the new rules for SCA and 3D Secure mean for me and my Wodify account?
1. If you are a client:
If you are currently a member of a business that uses Wodify, the SCA in Europe requires that you authorize your payment method when making a retail, drop-in, or membership purchase at your facility.
- You will receive an email notification 'Subject: You have a pending payment at ...' from Wodify.
- To authorize the payment, open the email and click the 'Authorize Payment' button
Note: Every authorization required will vary based on your bank
2. If you are a business owner:
Anytime you are manually entering a client's credit card information into Wodify, you will be prompted with additional SCA instructions.
When adding a payment method on behalf of a client, you may be asked to complete additional steps in order to proceed in charging this client. Here are the places in Wodify that will prompt Strong Customer Authentication:
- Point of Sale
- +New Payment Method from a client's profile
- Drop-in Payments on the Coachboard
- Manually paying an invoice
By selecting the recommended option 'On their device,' your client will be sent an email in order to authorize their payments. Please refer to the above instructions titled "1. If you are a client" if your member has questions about this authorization process.
Note: The client will need to be present if you select to authenticate 'On this Device', as this option may require bank logins or other additional personal information.
